In 1900, there were an estimated 14 million horses in the United States. Automobiles began replacing horses early in the 20th century. Finding space for autos became a real challenge beginning in the 1920s as more people flowed into teeming business districts. Free parking was fast becoming a thing of the past and, by the 1950s, parking was big business.
